Entebbe Botanical Gardens nature walk
Add-on

If you land during the day, you can add a short excursion in Entebbe Botanical Gardens for nature walk and lake views. It was developed as a tourism conservation and research site. Just minutes from Entebbe International Airport, the Entebbe Botanical Gardens offer the perfect first taste of Uganda's extraordinary natural beauty. Established in 1898 and sprawling across 40 lush acres along the shores of Lake Victoria, these gardens are home to over 500 plant species, from towering mahogany trees and exotic orchids to dense rainforest patches that inspired the original Tarzan films. Wander shaded paths as black-and-white colobus monkeys leap overhead, vibrant birds fill the canopy, and the sparkling waters of Africa's largest lake shimmer in the distance. This isn't just a garden walk; it's your first real encounter with Uganda's wild, living world. Whether you're arriving after a long flight and want a gentle introduction to the Pearl of Africa, or wrapping up your trip with one last moment in nature before heading home, the Botanical Gardens deliver something rare: total immersion in tropical beauty without venturing far from the city. Guided tours are available and highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand what they're seeing, from the medicinal plants that sustain local communities to the conservation mission that keeps this historic landmark alive.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Add-on

If you arrive early enough to allow for a half-day activity, you can also add on a memorable experience at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary located on Lake Victoria. The sanctuary is a conservation center for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. A 45-minute speedboat ride across the shimmering waters of Lake Victoria brings you to Ngamba Island, a 100-acre rainforest sanctuary home to over 50 rescued chimpanzees. These chimps were orphaned by the illegal bushmeat and pet trade and saved by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, given a second chance at life in a protected forest habitat where they roam freely, socialize, and thrive. Twice daily, they gather at a raised feeding platform, giving visitors an extraordinary, up-close view of our closest living relatives in action: wild enough to be breathtaking, close enough to be unforgettable. What makes Ngamba truly special is that your visit directly funds the sanctuary's operations and conservation mission. You'll receive a personal tour from a chimpanzee caregiver, learn each chimp's rescue story, and watch the feeding from the viewing platform as personalities emerge and rivalries play out before your eyes. For those who want to go deeper, full-day visits include two feedings and extended time on the island, and overnight stays at the Ngamba Eco Lodge let you watch the chimps build their nests at dusk and wake to the sounds of the forest at dawn. This is conservation you can feel, and it's one of the most emotionally moving experiences Uganda has to offer.

Your impact

  • Entebbe Botanical Garden ticket fees support the conservation, maintenance, and research efforts of the site. Funds are used for maintaining walking paths, protecting plant collections, and running educational programs.
  • Ngamba Island is a registered nonprofit, and your visit fees go directly toward the daily care of over 50 rescued chimpanzees, covering food, veterinary services, rescue operations, and habitat maintenance. The sanctuary also runs community education programs and awareness campaigns to combat wildlife trafficking and habitat loss across Uganda, working toward a future where sanctuaries like this one are no longer needed.
